MK
Music was founded by Misha Somerville in 2000 with the aim of
creating the world's finest Whistles. |
Working from a workshop by Loch Ness, Scotland in between performing with Scottish Fusion Band Croft No. Five it took almost 2 years to design a prototype for a Low D Whistle of high quality on which other MK whistles would be based.
Since its conception Mk Music has maintained an innovative and fresh approach to the design and making of musical instruments.

Whistles are arguably the oldest melodic instrument in the world with a history spanning over 20,000 years. Low whistles themselves go back thousands of years but remarkably disappeared for most of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Although the Low Whistle was successfully re-invented in the late 60's, the instruments absence from the hands of the great 19th century craftsmen left the design of the instrument largely undocumented, causing a great variation in the quality of the instruments played now.
My inspiration to make whistles has come from the opportunity to try new ideas. As with music itself, musical instruments have always evolved with the times - a sonic and aesthetic representation of the generation. The great instruments of today - from the drum kit to the saxophone - are the product of generations of musicians, listeners and craftsmen who value invention and innovation over preservation. Much work has gone into making the great instruments we know today - each generation using the technology of the time to bring new sounds to peoples' ears. To them we credit past inventions but what will the musical instruments of the future look and sound like? I am positive the evolution will not stop here and excited to think what might come next.
